Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

Fall has arrived with cooler temperatures and beautiful days! It is already enjoyable after a hot and wet summer.

As you know, this is a major election year and I want to encourage all residents to get out and vote for the candidate of your choice. Our neighborhood precinct is Brunswick Center at Calabash, 10050 Beach Dr SW, Calabash.

Early voting begins on Thursday, October 15, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday and ends on October 31. Saturday hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday hours are 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, October 31, is the last early voting date and the hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. These early voting hours also allow you to register and vote on the same day. You will need to bring something with your name and current address, like a utility bill, to register.

The election date is Tuesday, November 3, and the hours are from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

If you have any questions, please call Brunswick County Board of Elections at 910-253-2620.

Recreation Facilities – Kelly Wilson

Bocce Ball and Tennis

Bocce Ball has been being played and enjoyed by some of our members on Friday nights. All POA members are encouraged to play anytime at the courts alongside the pavilion. All supplies for Bocce are kept in the storage bin inside the tennis court area. Please return all equipment when finished playing.

With the heat finally taking leave and cooler temperatures finally sticking around, tennis and pickle ball are being played more often. Open tennis is every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 a.m. Pickle ball is open any time after tennis if your new to the sport or want to learn to play. POA members are welcome to play either. Equipment for pickle ball is kept inside the storage bin and we ask you to please return all equipment when finished with it. Bathrooms will remain open for anyone using the Bocce and Tennis courts.

Pavilion

The pavilion has been a great asset to our members this summer during these strange and trying times. Different clubs have been holding their meetings there as well as other gatherings due to the clubhouse being closed. Chair aerobics will begin under the pavilion on October 1 Monday thru Saturday at 10 a.m. You will need to supply your own chair, weights and water.

Monthly POA meetings are held under the pavilion every second Wednesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. All POA members are welcome to attend. If any groups or clubs plan on using the pavilion, we ask that you contact the office during regular hours to verify availability as some have reserved this facility. This will also give us information needed as to when or if additional things are needed such as garbage cans.

We still continuously get reports of people walking their dogs around the recreation area without leashes. Please be advised that all animals are always to be leashed except for on owner’s own property. Please leash and pick up after your animals when visiting the recreation area. Also, no animals are allowed in the pool and tennis court areas.

Pool

With water aerobics ending, this is usually a sign that temperatures are dropping both outside and inside the pool. Beginning October 5, we will be keeping the deck open during the day so members can still enjoy the sun and somewhat warm temps as we begin to pack things up. Loungers along with a few tables will be kept up and we will revisit hours after mid-month or weather permitting. Once we do close the pool for the season, we still must follow the current protocol to keep members safe and padlock the deck gate closed. Hopefully, we will be back to normal in the spring of next year and can enjoy the pool to its fullest. We look forward to seeing everyone then.

ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson

The time is now to submit your application for a political sign. Please review the following and if you have any questions contact me at the POA office at 579-2044.

Guidelines for Political sign: Please submit your request for a political sign at least 48 hours BEFORE placing in the yard. That allows us to log your request into the computer. As the guidelines state it must be removed no later than November 10, 2020. Please read the information below. Flags and/or banners with a political reference are allowed. They must not exceed 15 square feet in size. For a flag that is 3 ft. by 5 ft., banners the same maximum footage required.

“In accordance with the provisions of Section 3, Sub-section 121 (2) a. of the North Carolina Planned Community Act Chapter 47F, and in concurrence with Section 6, Sub-section 18 of the Declaration of Restrictions of the Carolina Shores Property Owners' Association, Inc. (CSPOA), the CSPOA will allow political signs to be displayed no earlier than forty-five (45) days before the day of an election and no later than seven (7) days after an election day. Signs shall be no larger than 24 inches by 24 inches, and on a freestanding support. No signs are allowed on any unimproved lot. A political sign is one that attempts to influence the outcome of an election, including supporting or opposing an issue on the election ballot.”

Again, remember that ANY thing you do to the exterior of you home REQUIRES ACC approval. During the middle two weeks of October, the ACC will be available to respond to requests on a limited schedule. Please allow enough time for the ACC to respond and approve any work BEFORE starting. This also applies to any tree removals you may want. Emergency repairs-or anything you need to respond to immediately such as a leaning/fallen tree, roof leaks due to damage from a storm does not require ACC approval. Immediately is the key word. If you are experiencing leaks from a storm, please address it to limit any damage. But, if the contractor needs to come back after a few days to replace a complete section or the entire roof, that does require ACC approval.

Happy fall everyone. I hope everyone has kept themselves healthy and safe while we are experiencing this pandemic. The recreation committee is sorry to report that due to the large number of residents who attend our events, we are unable to look forward to hosting any new social events until further notice. 2021 will truly be a time to celebrate and get back together with our residents, and party. Stay safe and healthy and enjoy the cool weather.

Garden Club Mary Conover

Our first meeting of 2020-2021 was held on Wednesday, September 9, at 1:00 p.m. at our Pavilion and was a great success!

Our president, Joanne Bendy, introduced the new board members and individual Committee reports were shared. Signup sheets were passed around for folks to have an opportunity to help wherever their interest was: fundraising, hospitality, Soup & Bake sale, etc. Right now, we are moving forward with monthly programs, but of course will have to address the COVID19 situation on a month-by-month basis.

Are you afraid of snakes? Can you identify a venomous snake? Did you know there are good snakes? Our next meeting will be held October 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Pavilion, and our guest speaker is Matthew Bookout. Matthew has been doing the "Snakes Alive" lecture at the Coastal Museum on Ocean Isle Beach for the past 19-20 years and is with the Ocean Isle Museum. Be prepared for a highly informative presentation!

The Carolina Shores Garden Club meets the second Wednesday of each month, September to May. Dues are $10/year. The Pavilion is located at the Carolina Shores Recreation Area, next to the Pool. Please contact Joanne Bendy at (910)575-0071 if you have any questions. Meanwhile, stay safe and healthy!

Tennis News – Bob Anthony

Things are beginning to look good, but let's not let our guard down when it comes to warding off the Corona Virus. Keep your distance, wear a mask when you cannot keep the distance and listen to the scientists, not the politicians.

Open tennis is now starting at 9:00 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Just show up with the proper equipment and you will get to play. Hope to see you out there.

Low Impact Chair Aerobics Mary Timothy

It is time for chair aerobics to begin. Class will be starting Thursday, October 1. We will be exercising Monday through Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Pavilion. You will need to bring a folding chair, weights and a bottle of water. Wear layers of clothing to be prepared. No class if it rains. Hope to see everyone there.

Book Discussion Group – Pat McKay

The monthly meeting of the Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group was held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2020, at our pavilion with ‘social distancing'.

The first item on our busy agenda was discussing our September selection, "The Long Haul" (A Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road) by Finn Murphy. Everyone really enjoyed this book, gained new insight into the lives of truckers and all aspects of this necessary occupation. The author's wit, candor and charm as he shared various stories of shippers, company owners and fellow workmen all contributed to this book's appeal.

Next, we each presented a book to be included on our annual list. For our October selection, we voted to have an alternate format where each member reads either a classic or a book she always wanted or meant to read and then share it at our next meeting.

We concluded our gathering with eating our individual bag lunches and having pleasant conversation.

If you love reading books and sharing them with others, please join us at our next meeting on October 16 at 10:00 a.m.

Care Team – Beverly Rowse

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
